One of the most talked about casualties of the boom has been the loss of multiple music venues in the city. The Silver Dollar Room is one of those magical watering holes that’s straight out of a movie: a 50s blues bar steeped in equal parts charm and grime that became a focal point of new and exciting music. But unfortunately the corner of Spadina and College where it sits is being re-developed into student housing for the nearby University of Toronto.

When local gonzo-rock-promoter Dan Burke asked Biblical to play alongside local lights such Metz and Dilly Dally for a farewell concert series, I felt compelled to cook up a design to try to capture how I was feeling. The closing of the Dollar might be the perfect encapsulation of old Toronto vs. the new.

It’s not often I get to pitch a ‘first-person, stop-motion, animated graphic novel’ about a vampire.’ It’s even rarer for the client to go ‘Yeah, cool. Let’s do it.”

Never the less, I had the pleasure of making this video for my pals Danko Jones. Huge thanks to the cast:

Melanie Baresic as The Slayer
Julian Swift as The Stoner
Ray McCready as The Pensioner
Tim McCready as The Pianist
Davy Love as The Cook
Hector Herrera as both The Bachelor and The Vampire
Matt Mclaren as The Dogwalker
Scout as The Dog
Liam Jaeger as The Boyfriend
Daniela Navas as The Girlfriend
Michael Wirth Broff as The Pizza Guy

Extra shout out to Shadi Didi at Vacation Couple for the drone footage.

Writers Guild of Canada http://nicksewell.com/writers-guild-of-canada/ Thu, 29 Dec 2016 18:06:06 +0000 http://nicksewell.com/?p=2089

This fantastic series of pieces was commissioned for the Writers Guild of Canada to highlight screenwriters working in the Great White North.

Our good friends at The Juggernaut tapped our studio Together to create two pieces for the series. The one featured here finds screenwriter Bruce Smith explaining his decision to leave Hollywood in order to tell stories closer to his heart.

100 & Counting http://nicksewell.com/100-counting/ http://nicksewell.com/100-counting/#comments Thu, 29 Dec 2016 17:22:03 +0000 http://nicksewell.com/?p=2111

Ashraf is 100. Her husband Mohammed is 110. They’ve been married 80 years. This story of love, life and the passage of time is a funny and moving look at the unexpected secrets of a long life.

Although the bulk of my film work is related to title design, every once in a while I’ll dip my toe into the editing world. This is the second biographical film I had the pleasure of working on — and I feel very privileged to have been able to help tell this amazing story.

Charming, funny and at times heartbreaking, this piece covers a lot of ground in just 10 minutes. Since the premiering as the lead story on the front page of CBC.ca on December 21st, 2016, the film has garnered tens of thousands of views and overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Ashraf passed away December 27th, 2016.

I can’t overstate how honoured I feel to have been a part of this special project.

Every so often I’m called up to rattle off some sound design for one of Hector’s projects. This particular one combines two people I really dig: Stanley Kubrick and Alan Cumming.

Rotate This | 25th Anniversary http://nicksewell.com/rotate-this-25th-anniversary/ Fri, 11 Nov 2016 20:12:28 +0000 http://nicksewell.com/?p=2156 I was commissioned to make this poster for the 25th Anniversary of venerable Toronto record store Rotate This. It was a treat to be able to work with 5 inks!  Prints were awarded to 50 lucky Rotate customers on Saturday October 29th, 2016.

I was out of the country, but I managed to get one for ‘proofing’ purposes.

Shoutout to the fine people at Kid Icarus did a fantastic job with the prints.

TED ED: Narcissism http://nicksewell.com/ted-ed-narcissism/ Wed, 17 Aug 2016 19:15:56 +0000 http://nicksewell.com/?p=2107

An animated lesson from TED-Ed on the psychology behind the elevated and sometimes detrimental self-involvement of narcissists.

Self-esteem is important, but compassion is too. How do you know when your self-involvment might be symptomatic of an unhealthy personality disorder? In this video we animated for TED-ED, psychologist and author W. Keith Campbell discusses the traits of narcissists.

Campbell was also interviewed about the book he co-authored with Jean M. Twenge, The Narcissism Epidemic, on The Agenda with Steve Paiken.

Madrugada http://nicksewell.com/madrugada/ Sun, 17 Jul 2016 19:20:39 +0000 http://nicksewell.com/?p=2142

In the spring of 2016, my partners Pazit Cahlon and Hector Herrera were invited by the Académie des César to represent (English) Canada at Les Nuits en Or with their film ‘The Ballad Of Immortal Joe’. The Académie commissioned all the filmmakers on the tour to make a two-minute film about ‘The Night’.

They contributed this short animated sketch to honour the memory of a dear friend whose sense of wonder inspired them greatly over the years. I had the pleasure of crafting the sound design for the piece.
