The Captains

Here are two frames I pitched for The Captains. It wasn’t actually a pitch because we had the job, but the producers wanted to see a couple of ideas so I put these together.

My first instinct was to go for a nautical theme that could touch on the sci-fi elements via star charts and such.  The producers really liked the direction, but they thought it might be a little too much given the candid nature of the film.

This second design was the one that was chosen for the film.  My thinking here was to touch on Shatner’s theatrical history. And, seeing as the film was a rumination on being a cultural icon, the chair seemed lend itself well to introspective angle of the subject matter.  Unfortunately, they ended up changing the lighting and type during production and the final animation isn’t nearly as austere as this original frame. Oh well.
