With the release of Oppenheimer, there has been renewed interest in the history of the Manhattan project. Atomic Reaction is a timely film that explores Canada’s secret role in the development of the atomic bomb and its downstream effects that are plaguing communities to this day. Pitchblende ore that was mined in the Northwest Territories was transported to Port Hope, Ontario where initial refinement took place before being shipped to the US. More than 70 years later, Port Hope (about an hour east of Toronto) is currently undergoing a 2 billion dollar clean up, due to irradiated soil from these actives.
