MADE YOU LOOK: A True Story About Fake Art

For Barry Avrich’s 2020 documentary detailing extensive art fraud at New York’s prestigious Knoedler Gallery, I was tasked with creating fun and quirky animated sequences to capture the increasingly incredulous stories about a mysterious art dealer. The person in question began as a European ex-pat who somehow had access to a vast collection of priceless abstract expressionist art. But the story continues to change and evolve, with evermore elaborate constructions as to why the dealer in question can’t reveal their identity.

The whole story has a terrific caper vibe, and since it would have been difficult to shoot — we decided to use a graphic treatment with characters to help tell the story.

Made You Look is available to stream on CBC Gem and Netflix in the US.
